The LegalChat tool was developed to provide concise answers to legal questions and to enable users to quickly and efficiently search for relevant information. For each question, there is the option of defining a specific set of knowledge on which the answer should be generated. The user-friendly interface simplifies the work process and provides a time-saving, straightforward method of accessing legal information.
Model parameters
For each query, the knowledge base must first be specified as precisely as possible. This restriction makes the query more precise. Click on “Specify knowledge base”. This will take you to the MyData page, where you can select files and upload new files if required. After clicking Submit, the parameters are preset for your subsequent questions. Here is a brief overview of how to filter the data:
- The legal system (e.g. Germany) under which the question is to be examined.
- The area of law (e.g. tenancy law) under which the question is to be examined.
- A specially created file folder (e.g. project XY) in which specific literature has been stored (if available).
- The document types to be used for the query. The database differentiates between: legal text, legislative material, court decision, commentary, textbook, examination scheme, essay, definition, model case and contract. Document types that are not relevant should be removed.
- The law book (e.g. BGB) to be examined in the question. Various laws are stored in our database. To ensure that a specific check can be carried out, all laws that are not relevant to the question must be removed.
- The relevant paragraph to be examined in the question. Legal documents on various legal norms are stored in our database. To ensure that a specific check can be carried out, all standards that are not relevant to the question should be removed. It is also possible to narrow down the search to specific paragraphs.
- The temporal scope of the standard to ensure that the regulation is only applied if it is valid in the relevant time period.
- Finally, you can specify the maximum file size for the data to be included. The selected documents are displayed after clicking Submit. You can use the “Select Columns” button to control which parameters are displayed. In addition, specific documents can be excluded using the “Used in Knowledge Base” column to focus the query on specific documents. In addition to the specified knowledge bases, LegalAnswer also offers the option of activating general LLM knowledge. This feature makes it possible to access a broader collection of legal knowledge that is not limited to a specific topic. General LLM knowledge refers to GPT-4o from OpenAI, for example, depending on which LLM the user selects in the settings.
Asking a legal question
After the parameters have been set, the question is to be entered, taking care to ensure that it falls under the previously defined criteria. Then click on the “Generate” button. If you want to change the knowledge database used, click on “Specify knowledge base” again.
Answer
The tool analyzes the parameters entered and generates an answer using the data stored in the database. Depending on the size of the files to be queried, this usually takes a few seconds.
Sources used
The answer refers to one or more sources used. In addition, there is the option to expand a list of sources to understand the exact origin of the information.
Rating function
